Apple Watch today they are not just an extension of the iPhone. It is also a relevant partner for health and a healthy lifestyle. Physical activity is measured by sensors that you can find inApple Watch quite a few. With the Series 6 came an oximeter capable of measuring oxygen saturation. It is true that some watches have all sorts of sensors. Some people will also say that the sensors in the watch are only a kind of indicative measurement. But that may not always be true. According to a recent study, at least this does not apply to the already mentioned oximeter vApple Watch Series 6.

A study published in Scientific Reprot states that Apple Watch Series 6 are a reliable way to obtain heart rate and oxygen saturation data even in patients with lung disease. A study from the University of São Paulo, which is one of Brazil's most prestigious educational institutions, was conducted on 100 patients with lung diseases. The researchers collected data on SpO2 and heart rate using the watch Apple Watch Series 6 and compared them to two commercial pulse oximeters. The study notes that no significant statistical difference was noted with respect to skin color, wrist circumference, or presence of hair.
The text says that Apple Watch tend to show slightly higher SpO2 values than commercial oximeters. However, heart rate measurement is said to be very similar. In conclusion, despite the tendency to present higher values when measuring oxygen saturation, they are Apple Watch very similar and accurate in measurement. If we look at the recently introduced Apple Watch Series 7, there have been no changes here in the field of sensors. But in the future, according to speculation, Apple watches are expected to measure pressure and body temperature, for example.

interesting that, for example, the Withings ScanWatch have had medical certifications since the beginning of sales, and here is just some study…. 🙂

It's a little off topic, but I have to brag that mine Apple Watch 6 saved a life a month ago. It was an EKG, I felt bad, and I measured atrial fibrillation... And this is no marketing.. I thought the same thing about all those "PR" articles where they say that AWs have saved their lives. It also happens in Europe, in Slovakia ;-) And I'm not talking about some ECG certification.

Fingers crossed for recovery. I would just like to ask… did you feel bad and get an EKG or did the watch alert you?

It's nice that it's accurate, but if it only takes 8 measurements per night, it's pretty advanced. If only to measure continuously all night. In the spring, when I was overcoming more severe Covid, at that time I had a Garmin 6X and there my saturation dropped to 80% during the night. Well, I don't know, I don't know if the AW6 would have measured me at the time when it was raining.

Does the oximeter measure continuously when worn? or is it a one-time test that you have to start the EKG properly? I have series 5, so I don't see, thanks
