I feel like with the reset they wanted to play it safe and use known characters. Lets you establish the story and lets them bring out characters who have been collecting dust for years. I honestly doubt we'll be getting any new faces until the next game

Indeed. I was expecting for at least one new character.
Even MK 9 gave us Cyber Sub Zero (sure, an alt version of Sub Zero, but he's still "new"), and DLC gave us Skarlet as a newcomer.

The main thing I hate about this is not the implication that there's no 24th. But moreso that DLC characters would have a lame pop up menu.
I want to visually watch the roster grow with DLC :/

Dude, probably unpopular opinion, but I miss unlockable characters. I know MK11 has Frost and like over a thousand other unlockables, but there was something special about unlocking the full roster, about not starting with basically every character ready to go

Man, Deception only had 12 characters ready to play from the start? That's brutal. I remember Ed Boon teased "Super Unlockables," and it took the internet a couple days to find Liu Kang hidden in Konquest mode.

MK Deception also had one of the worst strategy guides ever printed, it didn't even have Liu Kang's hidden chest requirements in Konquest mode.

Real talk, this was some bullsh*t.
When these came out, if you couldn't afford internet like my family, you were f*cked. You had to either buy a strategy guide with your allowance and cross your fingers that the information was even there, or hope one of your friends had the internet and was allowed to use it. Yeah, unlockable characters are satisfying, but also just tedious to get, and I'm glad that it isn't a thing anymore. It was just dead time that forced you to either meet arbitrary criteria or play game modes you didn't like before you could try all the characters. Can you imagine if you unlocked Frost by spending 1,000,000 koins in The Krypt or something? Yeah, that's not hard, but if you really like Frost, you want to play Frost, not Subzero until you're allowed to drop him.
When you were 13, it gave the games a sense of wonder and mystery. Now, it would just be a grindwall to unlock your main, who had a gameplay reveal trailer six months prior, and you could look up the ending for them whenever you wanted. The culture has changed.
I remember having to force myself through Smash Ultimate's campaign for all of the characters. It was so boring that it burned me out before I even touched other game modes. It's the same issue.

Deception wasnt really that bad unlocking characters, my 12 year old self had no issues unlocking them except just for Liu, and I had no access to the internet. Even then I was able to find him while not investing that much time. Recently went back and went even smoother, blowing through the story and a few side quests here and there, running through arcade with all the characters I unlocked and I had enough to buy the important stuff in the krypt. I much prefer Deceptions style and would love for them to go back to it one of these days

Eh, smash ultimate's campaign isn't that good, i'll give you that. But unlocking all characters are easy enought. Play 2 or 3 matches on campaign, go back to the main menu and you'll have a fight to unlock a new characters. Got all characters unlocked on the same day the game droped doing this

Imagine having to sit and unlock everything on hundreds of different machines, are you really saying that's not hard? It's one of the biggest complaints Smash Ultimate TOs have.
Either way, if they did make things unlockable, there should just be a code to do it all in one go, for TOs and for me, because I just wanna play my f*ckin character already.

Even if there is a code to unlock things for TOs, but not everyone else that means that pros would have to drain hours and hours into unlocking things when normally they spend all that time practicing with characters. It would push players away to other games. They're doing this for a living not a hobby.

And good for NR for doing it.
The crazy amount of effort that went into their cinematic story deserves to be watched.
MK11 has a ridiculous and absolutely bs amount of grind to unlock stuff.
And they knew it, too. That's why they gave you a bot to grind towers while you watch tv on another input.

One thing I want them to bring back in MK1: Secret Unlockables
Posted by laser16 · in r/MortalKombat · 1 year ago
One of my favorite things about the older games was trying to figure out how to unlock secret characters, and I think it would be cool to bring that back in this game. Maybe not entire playable characters but maybe secret kameo fighters (like Blanche, Art Lean, Mokap, the Roomba etc) could be unlocked through specific requirements in the towers.
Secret skins, brutalities, stage fatalities/brutalities would also be really cool. What else could they add?

And its not like it can't be done. Look at FromSoftware games. Modern day games with tons of secrets to find regardless of datamining/leaks.
The secrets are a big part of MK. Ffs they invented the hidden character in fighting games. Reptile was literally the first.

(copied my comment from another post)
things to bare in mind
In all 4 prior NRS games the number of roster spaces shown in the first public build = the amount of fighters on the final game's roster
In all 4 NRS games any unlockable fighters were included in the initial roster selection. e.g in mkx, the selection screen had 24 slots. shinnok needed to be unlocked but was one of the 24. this was the same in all 4 games NRS have released.
In the build up to injustice 2, prior to the entire roster being revealed the roster page on the game's website included spaces for DLC. (the slots fading points to this.)
that leaked image was an early build, we were never supposed to see it. doesn't guarantee or represent anything. [here's an image of innjustice 1 to prove a point. they out right announced 4 dlc. but an early build showed 3 dlc slots.] (https://www.fightersgeneration.com/nx5/game/injustice-selectionscreen.png)
i've seen folk argue that because the KP1 has 6 fighters, the remaining 3 MUST be on disc unlockables. injustice 2 had 9 dlc fighters. and injustice one had a kombat pack with 4 fighters...then they added two more showing kombat packs do NOT need to have the same amount of fighters. hell it's possible they split guest fighters dlc from the mk fighters (something fans want & nrs do listen)
in all likelyhood. NRS have been transparent. there's 25 fighters on day1 inc shao kahn. boon flat out said 25 in that quick fire interview. chances are there's no secret unlockable fighters increasing the roster size.
This super likely given the fact NRS are creatures of habit. using stats from throughout their history. I was able to predict the size of the roster and who'd make it with remarkable accuracy. kano the only 1 that went against what the stats told us.(even told me jax would be in but i foolishly ignored that based on a hunch that he died after mkx) that stuff is [Here] (https://www.reddit.com/r/MortalKombat/comments/afp86p/thought_itd_be_fun_to_try_make_an_mk_11_roster/) & [Here] (https://www.reddit.com/r/MortalKombat/comments/agnibk/this_is_a_follow_up_to_my_previous_post_i_look/)

Why couldn't they just do something different for a different game they don't have to do everything exactly the same way for each game. we are all trying to convince ourselves of what we want to happen or don't want to happen. I think they will be unlockable through the krypt and you can pay for them to unlock them quickly if you want to that's just what I think.

Kollector and Cet isn't there either. I'm certain those last few are the DLC's fading out as a "to be continued".

I like unlocking characters. It's fun, unless there's some absurd grind involved - though I get why some people don't enjoy it.
Too much trouble for tournaments? Add a cheat code you can input to unlock every character. Older games did it. Or, well, add an option to pay to unlock everything like they did with Frost... but that's super lame and a pointless cash grab.

Just gonna put this here because I’ve never seen it posted, but if there is a 24th character in this game it is not unlocked via the story. Havik is the unlockable you get for beating the story, if this 24th character exists then you unlock it in some other fashion.

Either NRS should be commended for keeping the final characters secret despite their history of leaks
Or the final character and kameo are reused assets like "Titan Shang Tsung" or "Hanzo Scorpion" or "Cyber Smoke" and thats the reason they didnt leak
Leakers assumed they were skins not worth mentioning... but theyre basically clone characters to even out the rosters.

Would you rather have them reveal the whole roster before release or save some to be secret/unlockables in MK1?
Posted by CaptainGhost007 · in r/MortalKombat · 1 year ago
By the time the gameplay reveal comes we’d be about 15 weeks away from release, and we already know 9 confirmed kharacters so far. Meaning if we use MK11’s base roster as a reference we could expect 25-30 base roster. So that gives us just enough to have them reveal and showcase a new character every week for a Kombat Kast but also leave some room for 2-3 kharacters to be “surprises” (quotations marks cause we all know the roster is going to get leaked quick as hell). That’s also assuming no new kharacters get revealed during the gameplay reveal on the 8th which we might see 1 or 2. I know some people like to start the game and have access to the whole roster ASAP and get to labbing, but outside of Smash (at least before Ultimate) a lot of fighters don’t really have any surprise roster unlocks anymore so I do think it would be nice to see some fighters as unlocks through story mode like they did with Frost in 11.

Nowadays knowing what the entire roster is beforehand is how some people decide whether or not to purchase the game. Even if a game has secret characters, it's near impossible to not find out beforehand because of leaks.

'Secret' characters pre-release are very much a thing of the past. Because even if the developers wanted that it would get leaked at lightning speed.
Far better for sales to have a drip feed reveal of characters pre-release culminating in the whole cast.

Nah, they have to reveal all characters before release.
Mainly cause characters are a selling point, and they can't advertise the game by saying "There are mystery characters that we won't reveal until the game releases", it sounds weird.
Also yeah, leaks are a huge problem.

I want them to reveal the whole roster before release with nice gameplay trailers.
Secret characters were fun decades ago when we didn't have access to every piece of information on the internet, but the entire roster will be leaked before we play the game.
And I would like to see the characters for the first time with a good official reveal, not a leaked picture with terrible quality or some random video in youtube from someone who got the game earlier.

It’s like when Derek said in the last kombat kast that EVERY node would have a secret fight, I was like ‘ahh he meant to say every mesa ofc lol’ because when he said it I thought it sounded too good to be true 🤣🤦🏻♂️

There is a secret fight on most nodes? Or at least 7-10 in each mesa because I found a hell of a lot more then one per 😂

Secret fights should straight up give you all the cosmetics your opponent has on.

Yeah, like have them be genuinely rare, gives more incentive to replay stages hoping to get a secret fight, and getting cosmetics you've wanted, it would make people more excited about a secret fight!

For sure, imagine getting a secret fight against someone with sweet looking gear you don’t have. Knowing you’ll get all that if you take them down.

This and limit the amount of secret fights to like 5 per mesa at most. I was getting a secret fight almost every other node near the end invasions.

Right like in MKX secret fights didn’t give much but they were pretty rare. I see no ping in secret fight for MK1

Exactly what I say after EVERY fight. It’s not a secret fight if it’s so common.

The announcer gets it right when he says "sick!".
You're damn right I'm sick of these secret fights and these damn talismans!

Wait those are permanent? I’ve been constantly discarding them because I keep running out of space. I assumed the only applied to one fight.

Mortal Kombat 1 secret characters and how to unlock them
Here's what you need to know about unlocking secret characters in Mortal Kombat 1:
Reptile: Reptile is the first secret character in Mortal Kombat 1. To fight against him, you need to achieve a Double Flawless Victory (winning both rounds without taking any damage) on The Pit stage. During the match, you should not block any attacks, and you must perform a Fatality on your opponent. If you meet these conditions, you will face Reptile in the next match.
Scorpion and Sub-Zero: Scorpion and Sub-Zero are not technically secret characters, but they have hidden moves that can be unlocked. To access Scorpion's "Toasty!" Fatality, hold the Block button and press Down, Up, High Punch. For Sub-Zero's "Spine Rip" Fatality, hold the Block button and press Back, Back, Back, High Kick.
Goro: Goro is the final boss character in Mortal Kombat 1. Unfortunately, there is no legitimate way to unlock Goro as a playable character in the original game. He is only playable in certain ports and remakes of the game.
Takeaway: Unlocking secret characters in Mortal Kombat 1 involves meeting specific conditions during gameplay. Reptile can be unlocked by achieving a Double Flawless Victory on The Pit stage, while Scorpion and Sub-Zero have hidden moves that can be accessed through button combinations. However, Goro is not playable in the original game without modifications or specific versions of the game.
