BATTLE OF SARATOGA: On Saturday and Sunday, September 17-18, Saratoga National Historical Park, located on Routes 32 and 4 in Stillwater, will present a Revolutionary War living history encampment marking the 239th anniversary of the world’s “most important battle of the last 1,000 years.” This two-day encampment will surround visitors with some of the sights, smells, and sounds of military camp life from the American Revolution, with re-enactors portraying American and British soldiers and women followers from the 1777 Battles of Saratoga. A special historian-led guided tour of the Freeman Farm battlefield will be offered each day. Camps will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free, but the normal entrance fee to the park of $5 per car and $3 per hiker or cyclist (good for one week entry) is charged.

BOOK LAUNCH PARTY: Chico’s of Saratoga is hosting its first ever book launch party for local authors April March and Susan Baird. The event will be this Saturday, September 17 from noon to 3 p.m. Released just last week, their book is titled “Reflections of My Life, April March – The First Lady of Burlesque.” It tells March’s story of Burlesque from her perspective and in her own words. Locally, March is better known as Velma Edmiston; she and her husband Jeff are residents of Wilton. The store is located at 329 Broadway in downtown Saratoga.

COMMUNITY ALLIANCE CHURCH: Community Alliance Church at 257 Rowland Street in Ballston Spa (a church that was ready to close its doors but is newly raised up & supported by Pine Knolls Alliance in S. GENEALOGY & LOCAL HISTORY: Heritage Hunters of Saratoga County will meet on Saturday, September 17, at 1 p.m. at the Town of Saratoga Town Hall, corner of Rt. 4 and Rt. 29 in Schuylerville. Lois Miner Huey, a retired archaeologist and children’s book author, will be the speaker. Lois will talk about the process used to uncover and identify the bones of 14 slaves, buried over 300 years ago in unmarked graves on what was once Schuyler family property. NATUREFEST: September 17, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Moreau Lake State Park. Free fun-filled family day of interactive nature related activities, raptor birds, insects, and reptiles. There will also be nature related educational booths, representatives from local parks, rescue organizations and wagon rides. SARATOGA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL: Short films, panels and hi-tech exhibitors will be included in the inaugural Saratoga International Film Festival on September 17. It will have local, national and international films and features from students, amateurs and professionals. Films will be shown at Bow Tie Cinemas, followed by question-and-answer sessions with filmmakers, while panel discussions and an exhibitor’s hall will be held at Saratoga Springs City Center. Skidmore College will also host screenings of local and regional shorts and feature films at the Davis Auditorium, followed by talks with cast and crew. John Delano, Associate Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, University at Albany (SUNY) will tell how the stone walls in New York and New England provide a way for estimating the drift of the Earth’s magnetic field during the last 200 years. ADIRONDACK MOUNTAIN CLUB: The Camino de Santiago with Dr. William Tedesco, 7 p.m., Crandall Public Library. At 80 years old, Dr. William Tedesco, a longtime Glens Falls physician, decided to walk a 500-mile spiritual pilgrimage across Spain on the historic Camino de Santiago, in part to raise money for local hospice care and reflect on the passing of his wife. In his talk, he will speak about the history of the trail and it’s global significance today.

DADS ON DUTY: Learn how to handle a baby, learn about issues you didn’t know were important and how to blow-off issues you thought were. COLLECT A CAN: On Sunday September 25 at the annual “Give Back by Taking Out” River Clean Up, the Battenkill Conservancy (BkC) in conjunction with Battenkill Valley Outdoors, will launch its “Collect a Can” reusable bag program. The pilot program will encourage BVO’s customers to use the nylon mesh, reusable bags to voluntarily collect stray cans or bottles that have found their way into the river. The bags will attach to the canoe, kayak or tube so that at the end of trip bags will be be returned with the rest of the equipment. The collected cans will be set out for local scout groups to retrieve and return as a fundraising tool. The “Give Back by Taking Out” River Clean Up begins at 10:30 a.m. Participants are encouraged to pack a post clean up lunch to enjoy at BVO. The event is free for all participants thanks to BVO offering all equipment, shuttles and services for the day. PSAT REGISTRATION: Saratoga Springs High School will offer the PSAT at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15. The PSAT is a practice exam sponsored by the College Board aimed at predominately juniors that plan to attend four-year colleges. Since the PSAT is only given once a year, this is the only opportunity for juniors to take a practice standardized exam similar to the SAT. Most juniors take the SAT for the first time during the spring of their junior year, so taking a practice exam in October is highly recommended. Sophom*ores are invited to take the exam if they wish to have the experience. PSAT registration will be held during the 9-12 Open House on Thursday, September 15, and continue in the counseling office from Friday, September 16 through Friday, October 7. There will be no registration cost for this exam.

HUDSON RIVER VALLEY RAMBLE: The 17th annual Hudson River Valley Ramble continues throughout September with more than 225 exciting outdoor adventures across New York’s Hudson Valley. RON CHERNOW: Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ron Chernow will receive the 2016 Empire State Archives and History Award from the New York State Archives Partnership Trust at a public program on Wednesday, November 2 at 7 p.m. Chernow is the author of “Alexander Hamilton,” the acclaimed 2004 biography adapted by Lin-Manuel Miranda for the Broadway musical sensation, “Hamilton.” The public is invited to hear Chernow speak about his career as an author, biographer and historian with prominent Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer. CAMP IRIS: From now through Labor Day, The Hyde Collection is pleased to present Camp Iris, a site-specific, interactive installation by artist Victoria Palermo, on the front lawn of the Museum complex. Camp Iris features three nearly eight-foot high A-frame structures with transparent, colored acrylic walls held in place by cedar frames and anchored to the ground. The public is encouraged to enter, pass through, or recline in the installation. Each A-frame has a 4 x 6 foot carpeted platform for sitting or lounging. Visitors will look through the transparent colors of the walls to take in surrounding landscape and buildings. As they walk through the piece, the public can experience the changing shapes that are formed as the colors mix and remix, overlapping one another. ALMA THOMAS EXHIBITION: The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College will premiere Alma Thomas (1891-1978), who focused on her artistic career after retiring as a school teacher at the age of 69. Her own highly personal style expanded upon traditional Abstract Expressionist or Washington Color School practices, and was developed through experimentation with abstraction, color, line, and pattern. Examining the artistic evolution of Thomas, the exhibition will feature works from every period in her career, including rarely exhibited watercolors and early abstractions, as well as her signature canvases drawn from a variety of private and public collections. The exhibition is organized by the Tang Teaching Museum and The Studio Museum in Harlem. The show will be on view at The Studio Museum through October 30.

BOOKS FOR TROOPS NEEDS SPACE (UPDATED): Ellen Keegan, director of Books For Troops for the past 6 years, has watched it grow into a large non-profit organization, having sent over 300,000 books to deployed troops all over the world and to over 30 VA hospitals within the states. Now her non-profit is being threatened by being asked to leave her office of 6 years in Halfmoon Town Hall, due to fire laws. A new space is crucial to the future of Books For Troops. The space to be donated must have utilites including heat and air-conditioning. It could be part of an existing business so that the utilities are already there. Because Books for Troops is a 501 (c)(3), the donation is tax deductible. It must have easy access from the outside since heavy boxes need to be carried in and out of the building. The space must be large enough to accommodate 20 bookcases, 4ft. wide by 6ft high, two long working tables and room for packing boxes and office supplies. It need not be attractive, only very large. While the Clifton Park, Latham, Malta area would be ideal, any area within 10 miles of Clifton Park would be considered. SENIOR NUTRITION PROGRAM: Saratoga County Office for the Aging sponsors the Senior Nutrition Program in Saratoga County. Part of the program is Congregate Dining, where persons age 60 and over can participate in a meal that is served at noon at several meal sites throughout Saratoga County. Meal sites are located in: Ballston Spa, Charlton, Clifton Park, Corinth, Edinburg, Galway, Greenfeild, Hadley, Halfmoon, Malta, Mechanicville, Moreau, Saratoga, Schuylerville and Waterford. This nutritious lunch is served Monday through Friday. Reservations are requried at least one day in advance by noon. A registration form must be completed by each participant annually. No food or drink items can be taken to go. Participants will receive a monthly contribution letter; the suggested donation is $2 per meal. THOROUGHBRED RETIREMENT FUND: Started in 2008, the annual TRF Hay Drive campaign is essential to help the TRF meet its annual hay costs of more than $200,000. BOOKS FOR TROOPS: Ellen Keegan, director of Books for Troops, announced they will be temporarily suspending the collecting of books at the Halfmoon and Clifton Park sites, as well as the ABC Sports and Fitness and Print Productions sites until further notice because of a huge overflow of books and lack of storage. Books will be going out to the troops at their normal rate of about 30-50 boxes per month, so we ask that you still continue your postage donations at: Books for Troops, 152 Oak Brook Commons, Clifton Park, NY 12065. PICKIN’ SESSIONS: Welcome to a new year of Pickin’ Sessions at the Ballston Area Seniors. Last year was a good year as we had more musicians participating and more people attending. This year summer months arebeing added to the program. The winter months will be determined by the weather and road conditions. The Sessions could use fiddlers, base players…even a harmonica, to make the evening more diversified and entertaining. Musicians are invited to play solo, background or join up with a group. VOLUNTEER TOUR GUIDES WANTED: Do you like history and nature? Do you like talking to people? How about doing so while riding the scenic Adirondack train route? Trails & Rails, a partnership between Amtrak and the National Park Service, is looking for special volunteer tour guides on the route between Saratoga Springs and Westport, NY. Volunteer guides provide train passengers with the option to listen to stories about the area’s nature, rich history and cultural sites, including National Parks along and near the train route. For the Adirondack route, this includes stories and information about Saratoga National Historical Park. Guides are provided with a volunteer uniform, training from National Park Service rangers on subject matter and presentation styles, Amtrak safety protocols, and written materials and electronic resources for further reading. SARATOGA 4-H OPPORTUNITIES: Since 1902, 4-H has offered the youth of our nation unique opportunities for personal growth in leadership, community service, arts and sciences. 4-H is a unique, out-of-school program available to youth ages 5-19, which allows individuals to practice life skills and achieve goals with caring adults mentoring them along the way. Volunteer opportunities are also available for adults with a desire to share their time and talents with youth. 4-H is the Youth Development Program associated with Cornell Cooperative Extension and it services over 700 individuals throughout Saratoga County. SARATOGA RUGBY CLUB: The Saratoga Rugby Club is proud to announce the introduction of two new High School Rugby teams. BALLSTON SPA AQUATICS PROGRAM: The Ballston Spa Aquatics Program is currently offering opportunities for public use of the pool during adult lap swimming sessions, from 6 to 7 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and on Monday and Wednesday evenings. A family/open swim is also offered on Saturday afternoons from noon to 2 p.m. Additional opportunities are offered throughout the year, including adult Aqua Cardio classes and a Learn-To-Swim program. SHELTERS OF SARATOGA ADULT DROP-IN CENTER: Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., 20 Walworth Street, Saratoga Springs. This year-round program offers a safe, warm and dry environment for street homeless men and women to do laundry, take a shower, get a meal and connect with critical resources. Various other community agencies will provide additional support to ensure that individuals utilizing the program receive the full spectrum of services available to them. This program supplements services provided by Code Blue Saratoga, which provides temporary shelter to people who would otherwise remain unsheltered during periods of extreme winter weather. FIND YOUR PARK: As the National Park Service begins a year-long celebration of its 100th anniversary in 2016, you are heartily invited to come “Find Your Park” at Saratoga National Historical Park throughout the upcoming winter. The park’s visitor center, located on Route 32 and 4 in Stillwater, remains open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily all winter, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day and offers a film, exhibits, fiber optic map, ranger programs, museum store and a kid’s corner where children can try on soldier’s coats or play in a soldier’s tent. The scenic tour road will close to vehicular traffic after December 1, but remains open from sunrise to sunset for walking and biking (when conditions allow), as do the park’s 10+ miles of hiking trails for walking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. New this year will be a special pilot project to groom ski trails, so be sure to stop at the visitor center for a trail map. 4-H DOG CLUB: Saratoga County 4-H has established a new 4-H club that will focus on dogs. Different from the 8-week dog obedience course, this club will meet year-round and will focus on a variety of dog-related topics such as breeds, care, conformation, obedience, nutrition, field-trips, projects, and more. The organizational leader is Tina Zakrzewski, who is a Licensed Veterinary Technician and also a Canine Certified Rehabilitation Practitioner.
